Went for lunch thursday and truly did not anticipate what I saw---arrived shortly before noon and it was packed---no tables available, a couple ahead of us and a lady waiting on her date. Interestingly enough looks like most people eating there were older than me and I am no spring chicken. Waiter whose name I forget found us a table in the bar---was thoughtful enough to make sure we were okay with the bar table, which we were. Our server was a different gentleman but just as polite and thoughtful---only misstep was he forgot to bring me butter for crackers however he realized that and apologized later. The menu looks great and there are many lunch items for the week plus day lunch specials. Thursdays was seafood pasta which comes with a generous salad. The seafood pasta did not look like it would be something I could not finish however I was unable to do so and had a doggie bag. Oh yeah, once seated we were served pretty quickly so overall it was not a long long lunch. Will go back soon for a different day lynch special

Excellent food. It is easy to miss this restaurant. It's located in the same shopping center as good wood hardware. The ambiance is a little dated. Besides that everything else was good!

The food here is divine! I've gone a couple of times with coworkers and enjoyed myself. The sweet potato hush puppies are to die for but then again most of the things on their menu are. With that said there are a few downfalls. I've had to send my drink back there a few times because they tasted awful. Diet coke with no fizz, sweet tea that tastes like syrup, etc. Also the gumbo tasted over cooked. The service can be a little slow I noticed but the wait staff always look like they are workkng hard. Would definitely recommend someone eating here.

Food was not good AT ALL. It was so greasy it actually made my friend sick. The little amount of food for the price was awful also. We like to eat out a lot & try new places and have never written a bad review but our experience was so horrible. We asked to speak to the manager and when he came out he was SO Rude, he mentioned he was the chef and the owner and his food was good. I have never been treated that way at a restaurant. We will Never come back to this restaurant.

Tried the fried green tomato Benedict for brunch and loved it. The tomato was lightly and perfectly fried, and was a fun take on an old favorite. The hashbrowns were good (though I'm never picky about hashbrowns), but the grits were unseasoned and seemed like an afterthought and a plate-filler. I'll be returning to try the lunch or dinner menu.

We went from here to another steak house for drinks and actually got what we paid for. Yeah, we had a $80 bar tab by the time we were done, but there wasn't a doubt in our minds or our BAC that we'd been served drinks with full pours and more. It's not a matter of "you get what you pay for," but rather a matter of really poor bar tending coupled with mediocre steaks. To be honest, if I get a gift certificate to go here again it will be my "regift" to someone else who I don't especially like. I've been here maybe 3 times in 5 years and every time it's been an incredible disappointment. Never again... it's just that simple.

I decided to give this restaurant a try one Saturday night after stopping by some of the restaurants in Towne Center and refusing to wait over an hour to eat at a chain restaurant. In trying to think of places nearby that aren't chains, I remembered that I wanted to try this place out. I was feeling a little grumpy and picky because of the hassle of trying to find a reasonable place, but I had a good feeling about this place as soon as we walked in. However, I was a little disappointed when I looked at the menu. There is a LOT of fried food. The onion rings were really good though and so was the remoulade sauce it came with. My salad was tasty and so were the sweet potato fries I stole off of my date's plate. He loved his gouda burger and the fact they were able to cook it rare, which some places won't do. (I understand the ground beef thing, but I'm suspicious of places that simply won't do it.) Overall, if I'm in the mood to indulge a bit in more fattening foods, I'll totally be back. I really did enjoy the atmosphere and the service as well.

We had such a wonderful time dining at Cafe Americain this past weekend. We had a group of 15 celebrating my son's college graduation. The restaurant has a very casual atmosphere, so everyone was comfortable - from those in slacks and skirts to those in shorts! Bryan, the owner, could not have been more helpful, kind, and accommodating to our large party. He had at least one more large party in there at the same time, but we were still VERY well taken care of and never felt that we were forgotten. We had several appetizers and cocktails to start which everyone enjoyed. I personally tried the fried green tomatoes and the spinach artichoke dip which were both excellent. My son ordered the stuffed jalapeños which he loved. They had several specials that evening including a filet with crawfish and a crawfish stuffed pork chop, both of which were excellent. My family would highly recommend this restaurant!

This is another of the city's unpretentious restaurants whose kitchen offers much more than one might expect. Nice variety of offerings, each generally prepared quite well, with that extra touch--whether that is a subtle seasoning or a non-traditional preparation or presentation. Pricey, and the bar (though roomy) seems to be a neglected afterthought, but go eat and try something you don't often eat.

I hate to say it but I believe I have food poisoning. I ate a Fried Green Tomato burger for lunch and within 30 minutes my stomach was churning and I have been running to the restroom on and off for the last couple of hours. It's a shame because I have eaten there many times in the past and never experienced anything like I have been going through today. The burger tasted a little off but I thought it could be Worcestershire in the meat.

The Friday lunch special (gumbo, fried catfish, fried shrimp) was pretty good, but the plate was dominated by french fries. The hush puppy (yes, singular) was great. Service was really good, and the food came out fast (perhaps because we all had the lunch special). Overall it was better than most places in the area.

Came here for the first time with some friends and was very disappointed. We waited 35 minutes for a table to be cleaned off. Ordered 3 different specials, all of which they were out of ... And it took our server 15 minutes to tell us they were out. About an hour after getting here, we finally got our drinks. And to top it off, the server knew nothing about the menu. They could not answer a single question any of us had about the food, what it came with, etc. May have come on an off day...risk it if you want.

This restaurant is among my favorites. The service is a little slow but they make up for it with amazing food. Generous portions and great flavor. Everyone I've brought here has been pleasantly surprised. They always say they've seen the restaurant around but never visited.

Being my second time in Baton Rouge Americain fed my appetite for southern cooking and did it with flavor. The grilled shrimp and catfish platter was amazing. I think the shrimp orleans was the best though. Savory food and cooked well. I recommend the grilled catfish. The best part was the sweet potato pecan hushpuppy and makes this restaurant a must try. More expensive then just two dollar signs however.

Can't believe I've been in Baton Rouge for almost 20 years and never dined here!! I had lunch here for the first time (07/08/13). I ordered the chicken kabob lunch entree. Firstly, the caesar salad served with the entree was delicious. I can't even explain the dressing because it didn't seem wet at all, which I loved cuz I hate my lettuce all wet. Secondly, the green beans were by far the best I've had anywhere. It comes with rice pilaf that I didn't care for so they exchanged it for more green beans. Overall, it was a great dining experience for me. The atomsphere was just right for lunch . . not too noisy. The wait was about average. Can't wait to dine for dinner.

Last Saturday night my sister and I held a 30th Anniversary party for our parents at Cafe Americain in their private room. The room is absolutely beautiful and very tasteful. There is a private bar and bathrooms so that your guest do not have to stray far. Suzanne, the manager, was truly a dream to work with and helped me every step of the way. The FOOD was AMAZING and the menu catered to our party. I honestly cannot say enough great things about our experience at Cafe Americain. If you need to host a private event and want AMAZING FOOD this is the place to go!

I live right down the street from Cafe Americain, and it's become my go-to place for when friends visit from out of town, or when I just don't feel like cooking. A mom-and-pop place where the waiters remember you, and they are very accommodating. The food is wonderful, as well. The only thing I don't like--which oddly enough is a plus for most people in BR--is the abundance of televisions in the place.

WOW!!! Being from the North, there is nothing like good soup. I have found heaven!!! Crab & Gouda, Three Cheese Potato, Crawfish and Lobster Bisque!! Are you kidding me, I LOVE IT!!!! Restaurant was extremely friendly and clean.

We brought a lunch group in here and they were great for acommodating our group so quickly. The food was really good too. Everyone at our table really enjoyed their meals. I had a spinach salad with blackened shrimp. The shrimp were well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The salad was huge, it felt like it just kept replenishing itself. Good prices, especially for a nice lunch and good service. That's hard to beat!

After I posted this review the owner came and comp our meal. Although he didn't understand that it had more to do with the fact that I had to request a manager to come out instead of one coming out immediately. I almost drunk out of it. I mean my mouth was on the straw. That put me in a very traumatized state. There should have been assurances that the will empty and clean all drink pitchers instead I got an excuse that th hey just sprayed and all the pitchers remained untouched. He missed the opportunity to try to let the patron know that they take cleanliness of the restaurant as priority. That makes me sad because I loved their foo

They seated us quickly and the service was average. I ordered the fried seafood platter that came with gumbo. The gumbo was good, but the batter on the seafood was very thick. It tasted more like breading than a good seafood batter for frying; it actually covered up the taste of the seafood. The portions were more than enough and we could have actually split the platter. There are so many other seafood restaurants in Baton Rouge with as good or better platters, I wondered why they charged so much.

Highly recommend this place for anyone looking to get the local Louisiana flavor. We had family in from out of town and this is where we decided to take them to get some local flavor. The food is great and the atmosphere is good as well. Best, most unique hushpuppies you will find anywhere!

Recently had a college reunion dinner at cafe americain with people from all over US. Food was fabulous. Everyone could order off the menu and get what they wanted. Service was great. Waiters explained the dishes and were available to answer questions and make sure everyone was taken care of. All were complimentary of service, surroundings and food.

Was in Baton Rouge on a business trip and asked a local for a nice local place to have dinner. I sat at the bar, had a few Abita Ambers, and ordered way to much, however, what better way to get a feel of a restaurant then sample a few things? Started with the Spinach and Artichoke dip and it was great. The sweet potato hushpuppies were delicious, but a tad bit overcooked in the fryer. I love oysters and had to try the po boy dressed. The sandwich had so many oysters on it that when I took my first bite, 3-4 of these delicious critters dropped on the plate. Don't you hate it when this happens? Yeah, me either. I had the stuffed tilapia and the sauce made it heaven. The service was friendly and inviting. To bad a did not have a refrigerator in my hotel room. I ordered way to much and could have eaten the leftovers for days.
